Photography Quotes

"One of the biggest mistakes a photographer can make is to look at the real world and cling to the vain hope that next time his film will somehow bear a closer resemblance to it...If we limit our vision to the real world, we will forever be fighting on the minus side of things, working only too make our photographs equal to what we see out there, but no better."
Galen Rowell

"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home."
Twyla Tharp

"Amateurs worry about equipment, professionals worry about money, masters worry about light, I just take pictures..."
Vernon Trent

"Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world."
Arnold Newman

"Take nothing but pictures. Kill nothing but time. Leave nothing but footprints."
John Kay - "Nothing But"

Happy Birthday, deviantART!

So, dA turns 14 and they asked for your very own deviantART Story. I don't write many personal journals but I thought it was time to change that and give you some insights.

I joined dA around 6 years ago because a friend I met online wanted to share some of his art with me. I thought it was longer ago but I'm quite sure I've never changed accounts and so I trust dA's timer. After that I didn't do anything and more or less forgot about the homepage. I rediscovered it a while later while sorting out my bookmarks and got hooked. I decided to upload some of my photos in spring 2009. Most of my deviations were landscapes photos from my travels and just quick holiday shots. Only after I spent more time here I started to actively think about photography. It were people like the artists below who inspired me and showed me what photography could be.

Japanese Autumn by La-Vita-a-BellaLos Cuernos del Paine by Ian-PlantGiants in Winter by FlorentCourty

For a while I was very active, perhaps a tad too much. Then came 2010, a year where a lot of things changed in my life. As a result I barely visited deviantART let alone took photos. Several years went by with me being (relatively) inactive, but I couldn't let go of photography alltogether and the wish to create, learn and get better grew steadily. In autumn 2013 my father gave me his "old" Canon EOS 450D which opened a whole new world too me - at least that's how I felt. It still took me some time but last February I decided to do a 52-Week-Project to bring myself back into the match. It doesn't work as smoothly as I would like to, but I'm of the opinion the most important part is to not give up. And I won't do that. I started to read lots of guides about different aspects of photography and try to get to know my new camera. I think a bit more practice and less theory would do me good, but one step after another.

I also started to browse through deviantART once more and decided to revive my themed features from before. I started a series as well, Fairy Tale Features, and am currently working on a second serial feature, so stay tuned :D. Visit my Feature Index if you like to see a list of all features I did so far.

During the last months I also found a new love in still life, especially food (sweets, cupcakes, cookies), and macro photography (mostly nature related). The feature shows some of the people whose work I admire.

There are so many more and I'm sorry I didn't mention all of you, but I didn't want this to get too long. Please visit my faves to see more awesome artworks.

Now that I am more active again I also got some new watchers and some old ones came back. At this point I would like to say thank you for the steady support, for your comments and faves. Getting feedback means a lot to me, especially now that I'd like to improve. So, thank you!

DeviantART definitely is a place that shows me everytime how much is possible if you're willing to make an effort. You won't improve by just wishing to, you need dedication and commitment, and dA is the place where I find my direction and new energy. There was a time where I looked at a deviation and got jealous and depressed because I thought I could never be like that. But things changed and now I see a deviation and feel motiviated. I realised those brilliant artists are normal people too, but people who doesn't only think about art, but create it. And that's the point exactly. Dreaming, imagining and planning is all fine and dandy, but a plan - however great - is worth nothing if it is never set into motion.

I feel like I'm still at an early stage of my photography story. I don't know where it will lead me but I'm well on the way and I hope you are too.
