MIDSUMMER - SUMMER SOLSTICE

The Sun in cloudless sky now stock-still stands,
With sightless stare surve'ing His verdant lands
And to the barren dirt he lends His light
To craft the nubile crops with unseen hands.
And yet, he cannot make them bring forth fruit,
Save for beans and garlic's arid root;
His laugh too loud, His gaze too hot and bright
An apple's tender sweetness to transmute.
“My love,” He hears the Goddess to him call,
“For love of our child, and for the sake of all
You now must wane, and slowly slip from sight,
And trade the spear for sickle in the Fall.”
A sighing breeze blew from the setting Sun:
“As you will, so be it done.”
