The world offers so many breathtaking locations and places to see and not everyone is able to visit them in person. With this new feature series I invite you on a journey to discover and enjoy the beauty our planet offers. Let's travel the world!
Sri Lanka, Asia
Sri Lanka is situated in the south east of India, in the indian ocean. Due to this location the island has always been a strategical important place for the travel between the Middle East and South East Asia.
Sri Lanka showcases no fewer than eight UNESCO World Heritage sites within about 65 km². All of them are remarkably preserved and bear witness to thriving kingdoms and ancient civilisations.
In Anuradhapura you can find the world's oldest known tree (Sri Maha Bodhi, approximately 2000 years old). It is a direct cutting from the original Bodhi tree in India where Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) had been enlighted according to tradition. A cutting of this tree can also be found in every Buddhist Temple on Sri Lanka.
The Kandy Esala Perahera is the largest cultural parade in the world and showcases the best of Sri Lankan dancing and music and the best of the domesticated elephants in the country.
Depending on the source, Sri Lanka can be translated to "glowing island" or "honourable island".
Feel free to share your own or favourite deviations from this location in the comments! I would be thrilled to see more of this beautiful place.
